There’s a lot of talk about power -who has it, who doesn’t- but very little actual engagement in our bodies with power.
Power gets tied up in personalization –my power, your power- when the truth is that Power is a force -an energy- in the universe that doesn’t belong to you or me or anyone else, and isn’t ours to attempt to bend to our will.
Having a debate about whether there are power dynamics at play in any given situation is a diversion. Of course there are! There is no place or time or circumstance where power is not.
We do not ‘step into’ it, or ‘own’ it, or ‘claim’ it.
We can, however, acknowledge Power; honor Power.
Just as those of us who grew up on the coast learned very young to have respect for the Ocean. In the same way, we should all have respect for Power.
Which starts by acknowledging the power at play in any moment. By being willing to sense that power. By not pretending it’s not there, or that it’s somehow up to us to ‘be powerful’ in order for Power to be present.
By letting go of the seductive idea that we don’t have (any) power.
By engaging with Power in this way -through our bodies- we become beings that cannot be possessed by the whims or manipulations of others.
By engaging with Power in this way -respectfully acknowledging its presence in every moment- we become beings that can sense with clarity when others are attempting to use Power for their own gain, or in ways that are not in service of Life.
